The Bible – Hebrew Scriptures (“Old†Testament) and the New Testament – is the most widely-read, most published, most venerated book of all time.
With translations of the complete Bible in nearly 440 languages, one of the two testaments translated into 1,168 additional languages, and portions of the text in 848 additional languages, we can say that today partial or full translations of the Bible exist in a total of 2,454 languages.
Certainly in the so-called Western world, Bibles are readily available and most professing English-language Christian homes boast a number of copies of up to 50 modern English versions. We have Bibles in our bookshelves, beside our beds, on the coffee table, in some cases even in our kitchens and bathrooms.
Odd then, that with so many Bibles around, great masses of Christians appear oblivious to the central place that the Land of Israel and the People of Israel hold in Scripture.
In 1993, not long after I came to live in Jerusalem, I bought myself a New King James Version, unmarked, smelling of ink, its gilded page-edges stuck together.
My intention was to read it through from cover to cover with one simple (as it were) question in mind: What does it say about Israel?
Not meaning to boast, but that copy is today barely in one piece. Its bonded-leather cover has been worn away and is now falling apart. Inside, my untidy scrawl has made a mess of the once crisp, pristine paper.
As I have read, some of my questions have been answered, but there is much more I want to learn and to understand.
About a week ago I opened up another new Bible – the same version, which I am comfortable in – and with pen in hand I began to read again from Genesis 1:1.
I thought it might be good to share some of my notes with my readers, and invite your comments and insights as I move ahead.
My quest remains the same: To see what Bible says about Israel.
You’re welcome to join me in the coming weeks as I search the Word for the answers.
Great idea, Stan. And wouldn’t it be good if each of your readers would encourage their friends, family and church pastors and members to join in!
May the LORD bless all those who search His Word to gain understanding of His purpose.
And may He bless you.
Hi Stan, I guess you didn’t like my comment for “Obama embraces Israel”. Your post reads no comments and you removed my comment. I find that hurtful. My King James Bibles (one from my dad, and one from my husband’s parents) are also tattered and worn. Underlined, tear stained, and the most precious material things I own. I have read the Bible from cover to cover to discover GOD. There is more to God’s Word than just what He has to say about Israel. The Church, the Bride of Christ is also central. The New Testament is extremely pertinent to followers of Christ. He is THE WAY, THE TRUTH, and THE LIFE. He is God’s son. That seems to me to be the most important gift from God to the world. If your Jewish friends do not care to hear about Jesus Christ, then I feel sorry for them. Do not deny Him and He will not deny you in His coming Kingdom.
Hi Stan, Jeannette again. My sincere apology for the “hurtful” reply that I just posted concerning my error in assuming that you deleted my reply for “Obama embraces Israel”. The first time my computer showed no comments on that post. I went back again, and saw that there were indeed many comments, including mine. Again, I am sorry for my hasty reply.
I so appreciate and esteem diligent hermeneutical exegesis and analysis of The Scriptures and what it is that GOD Declares - even when contrary to our views and opinions.
The difficulty some people have in such pursuit may be their refusal to acknowledge that the Bible is HIS WORD - despite minor literary variations among the remaining copies of ‘passed down’ epistles and texts.
Then to be able to effectively communicate those analyses is indeed a crown to the searchers….’All scripture is GOD-Breathed’….theo-pneustos…’ and is profitable for instruction….’ And, yet, it is not the analyses that are most efficacious - but the simple Proclamation of HIS WORD ! For, HIS WORD cannot produce nothing….it will accomplish HIS Purpose
go 4 it buddy
Hello , I have been following your posts and will continue……..reading my bible the character of God what he wants from us as followers of Jesus Christ…. so beautiful I love the bible for the words God has provided for us to love him. I got this from the internet ***PICTURE OF THE REAL JESUS
Rather than getting our information about Jesus from TV, art, or philosophy, he is asking all of us to come to know him through the Scriptures, God’s Word. He wants us to go to him ourselves and let him teach us about himself.” Mr. Goodenough I will be visiting often, following the Jewish people in the old testament I am amazed at there accomplishments thru God…….nancy
and now thru Jesus Christ……..sorry I hit the button too soon…..nancy
With you ALL THE WAY! May He bless us as we seek to know the fullness of His promises!
Many Christians are confused about Israel and the Jews by the teaching of what has come to be known as replacement theology. Some denominations teach that the Jews rejected Christ and so, were replaced by the Christian Church.
Of course if that were so most of the old testament would have to be rewritten or we’d have to say that God had changed his mind. But God never changes his mind, God is the same yesterday, today and forever.
The Jews were never forgotten for a moment. They have always been central to Gods love and grace. Gods love and forgiveness and grace has merely been extended to the Christian Church. One day there will be a great day of recognition, and rejoicing, when the jews finally see the Christian Church as their sister and the Christian Church accepts the Jew as their brother. It is called the great day of Jezreel. There will be a huge number of them who all come to Jerusalem to worship the King. Soon, Soon, Very Soon.
Stan, may I make a suggestion? For every passage on Israel that answers your question take a colored pencil and lightly color the verse(s). My faithful copy of NKJV had to be retired because of all the penciled notations, and because I must use a large print now. I have a set of colored pencils of which I mark verses for each attribute of God, the “obey this” scriptures and even those denoting who the Holy Spirit is and His work. Each color is for each of the different aspects of scriptures. I wrote down on an index card what each color is for. For example, purple denotes God’s majesty and sovereignty over his creation, red is for the Holy Spirit and His work, green is for scriptures denoting God’s mercy and grace, and so on. The index card is my bookmark. It didn’t take me long to remember what each color was for. I have also stopped making so many notes in my Bible since I learned that many of my notes weren’t quite correct about the passages I was studying. i was in a church that spiritualized many passages that should not have been interpreted that way. I am looking forward to this study and am hoping to contribute as well as learn. I confess, I have only recently learned the difference between spiritual and physical Israel. I am of the number who is not as knowledgeable about Israel as I should be. Your site is one of the few I have been led to ever since I became determined to read scriptures with physical Israel in mind (i.e., no more spiritualizing of those Israel passages!). May God teach us and grant us an increased knowledge of who He is and put within us an even greater love and respect for Israel.
Dear Brother in Christ
I read your column regularly. I am looking forward to reading more in the coming
weeks. I too agree that Israel is the focal point in modern day prophesy. Almighty
God never breaks a promise. Look to the Bible for his promises concerning the
nation of Israel.
This is a reply for Jeannette but for any one else who may not understand the interest some take in Israel. God said in the Bible that He has set “watchmen on the wall”. Some are called to be watchmen and some are not. God has given many gifts to us..your gift may not be as a watchmen. But God also said we should pray for the peace in Jerusalem. So please use your gifts God has given you but do not be disturbed if someone else uses theirs also. God uses us all for His purpose. God Bless all who await His return!!
Following along, reading, studying, and sharing…… (sigh) I miss the old Bible Study chats….
Hello Stan! I have been doing what you suggest in this article — reading (and re-reading) the Bible from Genesis to Revelation — since I became ill with fibromyalgia in 1994. I didn’t start out looking for information about Israel, but as I continued to read (during sleepless nights primarily) the fact became obvious that God’s promises to Jacob’s descendants are central to Scripture. I also became aware of the incredible importance of fulfilled prophecy as proof that God is faithful throughout all generations! Now I manage a group on InJesus.com called “Prophecy Connections,” and I frequently feature your valuable perspectives on current events in Israel.
Thanks for all that you do, and enjoy your walk through the Bible!

I have to take issue with Ginger’s comments, - unless I misunderstood them.
Praying as a watchman on the walls for Israel is not simply “one among many gifts”. ALL of us are commanded to this office. The LORD says to the gentile nations: Comfort My people”. This is not addressed only to those who are “gifted”
in this way. I
have been told by too many Christians that it’s “OK for you” to be concerned about Israel and to have Israel as a prayer priority, “but we all have different gifts”. This often from Pastors who are uncomfortable with the Zionist idea, and look upon Christian Zionists as something of a lunatic fringe. And they don’t want their church members offended.
So, rethink that idea, Ginger. Israel is high on the heart of God - David speaking by the Holy Spirit Says he counts Jerusalem “above my chief joy”. We should do the same.
Stan,
Mazel Tov! Keep up the good work. The greatest problem with the modern day church, is we have failed to teach who Israel is, and what the church’s responsibility is to her.
Paul stated clearly in Galatian 3:29; “If you be in Christ, then you are Abraham’s seed and heir’s according to the promise.
Because we (the church) have failed to teach Christians that we are heirs according to the promise, we do not see why Israel is important to us. It is because we are in Christ, that we are now redeemed into the promise He made to Abraham. It was Christ who opened the way for us.
Keep up the good fight! It is time for the Church to see that she has not replaced Israel, she is now, therefore, part of the Commonwealth of Israel and has a responsibility to defend Israel and our Jewish brethren.
Baruch Adonai!

Dear Stan, I too will be studying and praying as I go to better and better understand what God is teaching us daily. Bless you for encouraging this study and may the Lord continue to bless you as you do His work.
Israel, G-d called out one’s. His precious Time Peace. All my life I was in a christian church. Not once did I hear the word Israel. Back then no one hardly knew many things that were in the bible, like how the flesh would melt off the body before the bones hit the ground. etc. I met a Precious Jewish teacher, who also is now a completed Jew, a Zionist believer. I started learning HOW to read the bible, and I wept a lot, One of the first things I learned is G-d changes not, no shadow of turning.Along with that how HE said in His Word (He is the word, the living Torah, and Sabbath ! I read how . John tells us , why do you call me L-rd and not obey my Father’s commands? I learned that the OLD T as many call it, that is interpets the NEW T and that the New T is concealed in the OLD T. and What HE did once He will and is doing again. Like in the New it says, like in the days of Noah were..Not many wonder how it was !! Wickedness was all over, and it was the last time same sex marrige was santified. It also was a time that the fallen angels saw the women on earth and thot they were beautiufl and mated with them..Now the world is into cloning, even to put human cells in rats etc. How many are taught that or that it was 120 years after G-d repented he made man that He destroyed all but Noah and His familey because they had not mated with them. It was not the usual sin as some see it, it was such abomination the L-rd G-d had too. not to forget G-d told us what was will be. I see how the L-rd was talking to the Jews up to Acts 2:4. While studying I read the Romans, and chapter 11 was an eye opener. Not what we eventually taught , but how the Jews were blinded for us heathen so we would have the power to become sons of G-d. NO not little gods with a little g…like some are telling people. It lets us know that when the time of the gentiles is up, HIS eyes will return to Jerusalem, IN Gen 12:3, He did not ask us to love them or bless them,,He just stated those who don’t bless them are cursed ,,,just as those who have changed His Word is. In Daniel, it shows the knowledge if one looks at the Hebrew meaning, The Jews will one day open their eyes. some will grab the clothes of a Jew and say I want to go with you because I know G-d is with you. Not to forget He tells us, when HE stands on the Mt of Olive (the Jews will own the Olive Tree forever. You were adopted in and did not replace HER.And like G-d tells , He can and will cut some off and it will be easier to replace the branches with the natural brances. It says that when HE stands on the Mt of OLive , HE will bring up the dead, give them a heart of flesh, pour pure water on them, take away their sin and they will look upon whom they periced and a Nation will be born in a day..and then says, All Israel will be saved. Mercy has been from HIM from Genesis and the curse to Rev to redemption. Psalms 122 tells us to pray for the peace of Jerusalem. another statement. They are our family and we are Jews spiritually forever when we except Messiah. Jer 10 and 31 tells us of the new covenant with the Jews his beloved forever and their nation will head up the world and rule forever. Obadiah tells us those who love them and bless them will forever rejoice in the land in that day..It did not say all or mention those who don’t. Joel 2 and Joel 3 tells us how He feels and warns of those who try to take the land. They are my family forever, I love them with all of my heart and will die for them. Anyone who loves their own familys or anyone more than G-d is not worthy. Paul preached on the “other Jeshua ” and the bible tells us just before the rapture, apostasy would be in the church and the false prophets would get double punishment. He also tells us MY KINGDOM IS NOT of this world, yet so many churches are all sing up under the cults with their gospel of greed, self, humanism and works to try to build His Kingdom here..We were warned of the wolves in sheeps clotheing and how Satan comes as a angel of light !!!! with out the true gospel there is no power. Jeshua is G-d who came in the flesh, and then sits on the right hand side of Glory.. The so called reformation is full of new agers, comptemplative , empying the mind so demons can connect and have told the people that is how the first believers did it, NOT SO…member the man who got the demon cast out into the pigs that went over the cliff..he did not get into the word, and so it came back with more..We are not to unite with unbelievers, heathen,,or learn their ways, from such turn away..Jeshua taught in parables..one of my favorite is the good samaritian story, the three going over the rugged road. the gov man, the religious man and the third was Jeshua..the first two crossed the road and left the dying man to die,but Jesua put him on His ass and took him to the INN and paid for two days.( a thousand yrs is like a day to the L-rd) and then He told the Inn keeper He would be back in two days to pay him for what else he was owed. Time is up people. Another one I like is the prodical son, the older boy who stayed ata home is the attitude of the church today, but notice how the youngest is a symbol of Israel,,who came home finally broke and the FATHER was waiting and gave him the ring, treated him like royaly , served the best dinner and killed the best calf to do so???? that is how it will be…we are to go into all the world and tell the gospel to all the JEW FIRST…Daniel lets us know they will open their eyes..I think the pews will be full, for if He punished His first born, what makes you think you can trust HIm with Salvation? or not be punished? We are to tell anyone three times at least, an don’t forget the world will hate us as Jeshua said they hated him too, Does the world love your church that no long preaches the truth or don’t seem to need repenting or turning to HIM ? The new emerging church is leadingn you to Rome to be destroyed and follow antichrist,,turn back to truth, HE IS COMING SOON> Ezekiel tells us Damascus will be blown up never to be rebuilt, and the old Babylon that is being rebuilt. WE see the destruction in weather as Matthew tells us as our very government is the head of the four horns..taking the land from the Jews. Remember while you read because after Damascus,,Russia will bring ALL Persia against HER and they will be destroyed and Israel will be forever as G-d said they would never move HIs People off HIS Holy Hill. Sorry this is so long, but apostasy is big today..many come in HIS name but their hearts are far from him G-d bless you as we wait for His appearing.
Thank you very much, GOD Bless you and yours.
I believe the Bible says Jerusalem is the forever, never ending city. It will not be divided. It will not be controled by gentiles. If the whole world should come aganist Israel the whole world will lose because God will defend Israel, His people, His land.
This is for Jeanette. If we are not grafted in to Israel and become one with them and be in covenant with the G-D of Abraham; Isaac and Jacob. we have to be part of them and love them with our hearts, and you have to read!read& read the older scriptures to find our savour in them , this is your foundation that Paul was talking about , Yeshua is the liveing WORD IF G-D and , HE IS THE TORAH THE FIVE BOOKS IF MOSES and the spoken words of out FATHER . is where you will find YESHUA . And another thing the Church is not the bride of Christ but all who is in COVENANT WITH THE FATHER AND KEEP HIE COMMANDMENTS, ;IM NOT SAYING THESE THING YOUR BIBLE SAYS SO. SEARCH OUT YOUR SCRIPTURES
To Jeanette. “If your Jewish friends do not care to hear about Jesus Christ, then I feel sorry for them. Do not deny Him and He will not deny you in His coming Kingdom.” I’m afraid it’s exactly responses like that that lead to the majority of the Christian Church being arrogant and anti-semitic, leading to the persecution of Israel and the precious Jewish people. Lest you forget your Saviour is, was and always will be Jewish, and if you “deny” that important part of Him, you’re missing the complete picture of the Jewish Messiah and remember Christianity owes its existence to the Jewish faith. Israel is and always will be core to God’s eternal plan. So best you find yourself some “Jewish friends” and be blessed. Please also remember its thanks to the behaviour of many Christians and the persecution Jews suffered in the name of Christianity that many Jewish people are hesitant to hear about Jesus Christ. It’s up to us to show them God’s love and support with as much vigour as we tend to minister to other “nations”. Nice work Stan.
Hello Stan, Thanks for your ever faithful encouragement and wisdom you share with us when it comes to knowing the Scriptures. In what should have been a trip around the mountain, the Israelites dragged their sandals 40 years before they entered the Promise Land. The LORD encourages His faithful family to not be afraid or discouraged because of the vast army that choose to be the enemy of Christ. The battle is not ours, but God’s. In due time the LORD will set ambushes against His enemies and they will help to destroy one another; no one will escape. Continue to submit to God and He will be faithful to guide you as a strong spiritual influence in this world looking for answers - the truth.
The word of God is our souls bread and our souls drink, we need to eat and drink of his word in order to be the healthy person God wants us to be. And prayer is our desert!.
The Lord says to “warch and pray that we may be accounted worthy to escape all that is to come upon on this earth” . He means that we are to be instant in prayer 24-7 for the needs of the world and others all around us, in other words we need to put our love into action by our compassion.
WHY WILL YOUR COLUMN ‘THE BIBLE ON ISRAEL’ NOT MENTION GOD’S NAME,AND WHY EVERY COMMENT MENTIONED ‘G-d’. WHO IS THIS ‘G-d’ THAT YOU WORSHIP? MY GOD IS JEHOVAH GOD. JUST CURIOUS WHY YOU WERE AFRAID TO SPELL HIS NAME.
…Still with you on the wall.
Ken.
Hi Stan, I stand with you in the reading of the Bible. As Christians I believe we are to read through them daily and gain knowledge from them so that we do not repeat things that happened in the Bible and throughout History. But some have not learned this and are repeating history and it will continue until those of us who know the Scriptures and what Our Father in Heaven wants of us. We that are knowledgeable in the Scriptures and some who are not are the ones that need to lead the World into what is right and righteous. We have been ordained to go and tell the World and especially the Chosen of God. God told us in The Great Commission in Matthew 28: 19-20 to Go and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all that I commanded you ; and lo He is with us always even to the end of the age. This was not only directed to the disciples but to all the generations to come. We are responsible for teaching the Word of God to everyone on this planet. If they choose not to believe then they will be the ones that will suffer. And if we ignore and disobey God then we will be disciplined for our actions by God. Israel belongs to the Jews and will always belong to them. The Palestinians never owned any of the land that God gave Israel and no one not even the United States has the right to tell Israel to give their land up and to stop building on it. I am proud to be an American and a Christian, but I do not approve of the way they are handling Israel. I feel sorry for our government officials that refuse to see the truth because they will never be free if they continue telling Israel to give up their lands for so called peace. The peace that we pray for Jerusalem is the peace that passes all understanding that God created them and also created the Christians and made us (Christians) His adopted Sons and Daughters and Siblings of the Jews. Therefore we have a stake in what goes on in Israel and we are to help our brothers to protect their lands. Condie, the President and others in our government will be punished for telling Israel to give up their lands for peace. God said that if you are against my people then you are against me. He said He would destroy any Nation that rises up against Israel and that is precisely what He is doing to America today. America is refusing to listen to God and He is taking it away from us slowly by turning it over to those who are unbelievers. He did the same thing to the Jews many centuries ago. We as Christians need to stay on our knees in prayer and be diligent in making the world see that the only way out of this world be destroyed is to accept God and His son Jesus Christ and then there will be peace forever more. May God Bless everyone here on this site and bring them to their knees in prayer and make each of us more knowledgeable in the Scriptures so that we may lead our brothers and sisters in the world to Christ and to everlasting peace. Amen
My God “Jehovah”" looks at our heart and knows exatly what we really feel about him!, there is no fooling him!!! . If you aren’t truly in love with Him, he knows it. Israel is the heart of God, they are the reason Gods heart beats, when you speak or teach on Israel, you are speaking and teaching on Jehovah God!. As Israel goes, so goes the world!. Without Israel the Gentiles would not be able to have salvation. Salvation has come to the Gentiles in order to make Israel jealous. I don’t fully understand this, but I know I will soon because the time to favor Zion has come, it is now time for God to do his last day work!. We are in the last seconds of Gods last day time table! God looks at our heart. and we are looking at Gods heart when we search out the scriptures concerning Israel!. I love the heart of God, therefore, I love Israel!!!
For many years, I was involved in churches which never mentioned Israel (except for reading from Scripture). Some of those churches were denegrating Israel and the Jews - and I hate to admit - I almost “went along” with them. I can only thank God for taking me out of this scenario and putting me under preaching about the place of Israel and the Jew, and it being paramount to fulfilment of Biblical Prophecy concerning the latter days.
Believe me, it is WONDERFUL to read the positive comments on this site. The faithful remnant is God’s way of providing prayer and support for Israel. Isn’t it amazing how He works? With imperfect creatures (saved by grace) such as us.
Sadly, we read where your Pres. Geo. W Bush may become a Roman Catholic at the end of his term in office. Any wonder at the prolific attempts by the President and his side-kick Rice at trying to divide THE land?
Time is short and we must be about our Father’s work; not the least being given to PRAYER!
Be encouraged, my dear fellow-believers “For your labours are not in vain, in the Lord.” Amen.
P.S. Pray, also, for this fellow Todd Bentley who, himself, is utterly deceived and who is leading many into gross, devilish deception with his “signs and wonders”. May the Holy Spirit deal mercifully with this tragic man before he suffers the consequences of God’s holy judgment.
Shalom.
Alan the Aussie.
